O people! Be wary of your Lord/Master, who created you from a single essence/soul, created from it its mate, and from these two brought forth many men and women. Fear Allah, in whose name you make claims on one another and become kin. Allah watches over you.

If you fear that you will not be able to deal justly with the orphans, then marry, of the women who please you, two, three, or four wives. If you fear that you will not be able to be just among the wives you have married, then be content with one, or with those you lawfully possess. This is more suitable so that you do not commit injustice.

Test the orphans until they reach the age of marriage. If you see maturity/competence in them, return their property to them. Do not hasten to spend their property out of fear that they will grow up and take it back. Whoever is not in need should not stoop to it, and whoever is poor may benefit from it to a reasonable extent. When you return their property to them, hand it over in the presence of witnesses. Allah is sufficient as the One who calls to account.

Concerning your children's shares of inheritance, Allah advises you as follows: the share of a male is equal to the share of two daughters. If the heirs are only daughters and they are more than two, they receive two-thirds of the inheritance. If there is only one daughter, half is hers. As for the parents: if the deceased has a child, each of them receives one-sixth; if the deceased has no child and the only heirs are the mother and father, one-third goes to the mother. If the deceased also has siblings, one-sixth goes to the mother. All this division comes after the deceased's bequest has been carried out and any debt has been paid. You do not know which of your fathers and your sons is nearer to you in benefit. These are shares determined by Allah. Surely Allah knows all things and decides rightly in the rulings He lays down.

If your wives have no children, half of what they leave is yours. If they have children, a quarter of their estate belongs to you. This too comes after their bequests have been carried out and their debts paid. Of what you leave, a quarter belongs to your wives if you have no child. If you have children, an eighth is theirs. These too come after your bequest has been carried out and your debts paid. If a man or a woman whose estate is inherited has no first-degree heirs—neither parents nor child—but has a brother or a sister, each of them receives one-sixth. If the siblings are more than that, they share in one-third, after the deceased's bequest has been carried out and debts paid. The heirs must not be harmed by distributing more than one-third of the estate through a bequest. This is a command from Allah. Allah truly knows, and is forbearing.
These are the limits set by Allah. Whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger who conveys Allah's messages, He will admit him to gardens beneath which rivers flow, in which he will abide. That is the greatest salvation.
And whoever rebels against Allah and His Messenger who conveys Allah's messages and transgresses His limits, He will cast him into the Fire, in which he will abide. For him there is a humiliating punishment.

Forbidden to you are: your mothers, your daughters, your sisters, your paternal aunts, your maternal aunts, your brothers' daughters, your sisters' daughters, your foster mothers who nursed you, your sisters through this nursing, your wives' mothers, your stepdaughters born of the wives with whom you have consummated marriage and who live under the same roof—if you have not consummated marriage with their mothers, there is no blame—the wives of your own sons, and having two sisters married to you at the same time. But what happened in the past is in the past. Allah is much forgiving, abundant in mercy.
Married women are also forbidden to you, except those you lawfully possess. This is Allah's ruling, which He has made known to you. Beyond these, it is lawful for you to seek to marry women while adhering to the standards of chastity and honor, without entering into a relationship outside marriage, on condition that you give them their mahr from your property. As for the women from whom you benefit, give them their mahr in full, as an obligation. There is no sin on you in mutually agreeing, after the mahr has been set, on a different mahr. Surely Allah knows all things and decides rightly in His judgment.

Whoever among you cannot afford to marry free believing women, let him marry a believing woman under your authority whom you own. Allah knows best your worth and your faith. You are all one as believers. So marry them with the permission of their guardians, on condition that they guard their chastity, do not commit fornication, and do not take secret lovers; and give them their mahr in a fitting manner. If they commit fornication after marriage, apply to them half the punishment given to free women. This is for those of you who fear falling into fornication. If you are patient, it is better for you. Allah is forgiving and merciful.

English Translation
Some of those who became Jews, distorting words from their original meanings and twisting their tongues with the intent of insulting the religion, say, "We heard and held on/we disobeyed," "Listen—may you not hear," and "Ra'ina" (herd us). If they had said, "We heard and we obeyed; listen to us and attend to us," it would surely have been better and more honest for them. But Allah has cursed them because of this disbelief of theirs. So, except for very few of them, they do not become believers.

Have you not seen those who claim to believe both in the Quran revealed to you and in the revelations sent down before you? They want to resort to the arbitration of the one who has made rebellion against Allah a system (Taghut). Yet they were commanded to reject him. Moreover, this Satan wants to lead them into deep misguidance.
When they are told, "Come to the ruling of the Quran that Allah has revealed and that the messenger conveyed!" you see those two-faced hypocrites turning away from you as far as they can.
Then how will it be with them when a calamity strikes them because of what their own hands have done? Then they will come to you, swearing by Allah: "We wanted nothing but goodness and reconciliation!"
Allah knows very well the true intention and purpose in their hearts. So do not give them credit, but still admonish them and speak to them clear and moving words that will stir their conscience.

English Translation
Have you not seen those who were told, "Hold back your hands from fighting, perform the prayer, and give the zakat"? Yet when fighting was commanded for them, a group of them feared the enemy as they fear Allah, or with an even greater fear, and said, "Our Lord, why have You commanded fighting for us? Could You not postpone this command to fight a little longer?" Say: "The pleasure of this world is temporary and very little. The Hereafter is better for those who act responsibly. For you will not be wronged even in the slightest."

So do not take them as protectors/friends and confidants until they believe and emigrate in Allah's way. If they turn to hostility against you, seize them and kill them wherever you find them. Do not take from among them any guardian/friend or helper.
But do not touch those who take refuge with a people with whom you have a treaty, or those who come to you distressed at heart, not wishing to fight either you or their own people. Had Allah willed, He would have set them upon you, and they would have fought you. If they leave you alone, do not fight you, and offer you peace, then Allah has given you no authority against them.

A believer never has the right to kill another believer—unless it is by mistake. If someone kills a believer by mistake, his penalty is to free a believing slave and to pay diya/blood money, handed over to the family of the one killed. If they forgo the diya, the killer is released from paying it. If the one killed was a believer but from a people hostile to you, then the penalty is only freeing a believing slave. If he was from a people with whom you have a treaty, it is diya handed over to the family of the one killed and freeing a believing slave. But whoever cannot find the means for this must fast two consecutive months, so that his repentance may be accepted by Allah. For Allah knows all things and decides rightly.

Allah has raised those who fight with their wealth and their lives to a rank above those who avoid the struggle. Granted, Allah has promised Paradise to all the believers. But Allah has given those who fight a far greater reward than those who stay at home.

English Translation
As for those who wronged and harmed themselves, when the angels take their souls they ask: "What did you do for the sake of your faith?" They say: "We were left powerless in the land." The angels say: "Was not Allah's earth wide? You should have emigrated in Allah's way!" Their place is Hell. What an evil place of return it is!
Excepted from this ruling are only the men, women, and children who are oppressed and, because they are powerless, could not find the means to emigrate.
These are the ones whom it is hoped Allah will pardon. Allah is pardoning and forgiving.

At such a time, if you are among them and lead them in prayer, let one group stand in prayer with you, carrying their weapons. Let the other group keep watch. When those praying with you have prostrated, let them withdraw, and let the other group, who have not prayed, come and pray with you. And let them too be cautious and keep their weapons with them. The disbelievers wish that you would forget and leave behind your weapons and equipment because of the prayer, that they would find you off guard, and that they could raid you suddenly. If you are in difficulty because of rain, or if you are ill, there is no blame on you in laying down your weapons while you pray. But still be cautious. Allah has prepared a humiliating punishment for the disbelievers.

English Translation
The People of the Book ask you to bring down to them a book from the sky. Yet they had asked Moses for something greater than this and said, "Show us Allah plainly." Because of this wrongdoing of theirs, the thunderbolt struck them. After clear proofs had come to them, they worshipped the calf statue. Even so, We forgave them after that, and We gave Moses clear proof and power.
To make them fulfill the covenant/pledge they had given, We had raised the mountain above them and said to them: "Enter the gate of the city prostrating and in humility." And We took from them a firm covenant/pledge, saying to them, "Do not violate the Sabbath prohibition."
Because they broke their covenant/pledge, did not believe in Allah's verses, killed the prophets unjustly, and said, "Our hearts are closed to knowledge," We cursed them. In fact, they have closed their hearts to Allah's verses; so, except for very few of them, they do not believe.
And We cursed them also because of their persistence in disbelief and their uttering a great slander against Mary.
And because they said, "We killed the Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, Allah's messenger"... Yet they neither managed to kill him nor to crucify him. But they supposed so. Those who differ about Jesus are in deep doubt about this. They have no certain knowledge about it; they only follow conjecture. They certainly did not manage to kill him.
Rather, Allah (caused him to die when his appointed time came and) exalted him to His presence. Allah is mighty, exalted, and decides rightly in every judgment.
There is no one among the People of the Book who will not have accepted this truth before his death. And Jesus will bear witness against them on the Day of Resurrection.

Those who became Jews behaved rebelliously and turned people away from Allah's path, and they made unlawful wholesome foods that had previously been made lawful for them.
And because they took interest/unjust gain although it had been forbidden to them, and in this way consumed people's property by unjust means—We have prepared a painful punishment for these disbelievers.
But those among them who possess true knowledge and faith, who believe without discrimination in what was revealed to you and in the revelations sent before you, who perform the prayer properly, who give the zakat, and who fully believe and trust in Allah and the Last Day—to them We will give a very great reward.
