English Translation
229Divorce is twice; after that, a wife must either be kept in kindness or released gracefully. It is not lawful for you to take back anything you have given women (the mahr), unless both the woman and the man fear they will not keep within the bounds set by Allah. But if you fear that they will not keep within the bounds set by Allah, there is no sin on either of them if the wife seeks divorce by giving her husband compensation. These are Allah's legal limits; do not transgress them. Whoever transgresses the limits Allah has set—they are the very wrongdoers.
