English Translation
217They ask you about fighting in the sacred, inviolable months. Say: "Fighting in that month is a grave offense; but turning people away from Allah's path, denying Him, barring people from the Masjid al-Haram, and driving its people out of it are graver in Allah's sight. And fitna (persecution) is worse than killing. If they can, they will keep fighting you until they turn you away from your religion. Whoever among you turns away from his religion and dies a disbeliever—their deeds are wasted in this world and in the Hereafter. They are the people of the Fire. They will abide there."
