Verses 2–4
O people! Allah has sent you this Book so that you may follow the system of life that is the reason for your creation and serve none but Him.
O Prophet! Say: “I too have been charged with inviting you to this and with giving good news to those who follow the call. Cleanse yourselves by repenting, ask Allah for forgiveness, and turn to living the life that is the reason for your creation, so that Allah may grant you a peaceful, honorable, virtuous, and blessed life until your term in this world runs out.
If you turn your backs on this call, are ungrateful, and oppose it, you will have condemned yourselves to a dreadful punishment on the Day of Reckoning. In the end every person will be returned to Allah to receive what he deserves. Allah’s power is sufficient for everything.”

Those who shy away from believing in Allah’s call shut and cover their ears, eyes, and hearts, layer upon layer, against Allah’s verses, so as to protect their present position. Verses 7–8
Allah created the heavens and the earth in six stages; then He created water and, manifesting His knowledge and power upon water, created the essence of all living things from water too; and, establishing His sovereignty over what He created from water, He bound their lives to laws and established their order. Then, to test which of you will follow His call, He set limits concerning your deeds and left you alone with your choices.
O Prophet! When you now tell people, “You will be raised to life again after death and called to account for the way you lived your worldly lives,” some of them will say, “These are baseless words, spoken to bewitch us.”
If We postpone for a while the punishment they deserve, then they say, “If the punishment we are threatened with is coming, let it come at once, and let us see.” Will they be able to say this on the day they meet it, too? On That Day there is no power that can turn the punishment away from them; and at last the punishment they mocked will have closed in on them from every side, and by then it will long since have been too late.

If, after granting the human being blessings from Our presence, We take them back from him, he at once turns ungrateful toward Us, forgets what We gave him, and falls into despair. Or if, after some hardship or misfortune that has befallen him, We bring him well-being and abundant blessings, then instead of turning to Us in thanks and obedience, he says, “My misfortunes have let go of me, I am free of my troubles, I have removed the causes that brought me to this,” takes the credit himself for all that happened, and grows arrogant, spoiled, and insolent.

Verse 17
Can one who pays no heed to the life of the Hereafter ever be the same as one who believes in his Lord’s verses and believes that a witness is watching over him? Before the Quran, too, Allah sent the Gospel, which invited people to the reason for their creation, and before that the Torah with Moses, as a guide. Those who believe in the truths that remain from them turn to and submit to what they are invited to through the Quran. And whoever turns away from this call, his destination will be Hell. Have no doubt about this. (Do not hold back from conveying Allah’s verses!) But sadly most people still do not believe this truth.

Who could be more astray and more unjust than one who attributes to Allah the lies he himself has invented? Such people will be brought before their Lord on the Day of Reckoning, and their crimes will be laid before them in the presence of witnesses. They will certainly receive the punishment for keeping people from following the truth and for making it seem incomprehensible; they will find no friend to save them from the punishment of Hell, and they will not escape Allah’s punishment.
On the Day of Reckoning the false gods will vanish, and so those who deceived themselves and others by following them will suffer great ruin and destruction.

Enough now; we will certainly not accept your call; but if you want to prove the truth of what you say, bring down on us the punishment you threaten us with, and let us see.”
Noah said to them, “It is Allah who will bring this punishment upon you. If He wills, you will never escape it. If you have decided to persist stubbornly in associating partners with Allah and in disbelief, then my counsel will be of no use to you. But never forget that Allah is my Lord and your Lord, and that He will raise everyone to life again after death and call them to account for their stance toward His call.”

Verses 42–44
The ship began to make its way amid waves like mountains; at one point Noah caught sight, among the waves, of his son, who had chosen to live associating partners with Allah. Noah called out to him, “My dear son, repent of associating partners with Allah, turn to Allah, and come; be among those who are saved with us; do not stay among the deniers.”
But his son said, “I will climb a mountain and escape drowning.” Noah called out to his son, “Today no one who associates partners with Allah and denies the truth can escape Allah’s sentence of destruction, except the believers! They are the ones who will be saved.” Then a great wave came between them, and his son too could not escape drowning.
When they had all been destroyed, Allah commanded, “O earth, swallow your water; O sky, hold back yours!” Thereupon the waters receded. By Allah’s decree the ship came to rest on Mount Judi. Those who disembarked said, “Woe to those who deserved destruction for not turning from their shirk!”

His people replied to Hud: “O Hud! You have not come to us with a miracle that shows you are a prophet, so that we might believe you, abandon our present gods, and follow your call. Do not expect us to accept your call without showing a miracle; it seems that one of our gods has struck you with some affliction, and that is why you want us to abandon our gods; we have nothing else to say to you.”
Hud said to them: “Let Allah be witness, and you too be witnesses, that I am far removed from your gods whom you associate as partners with Allah, and that I will never accept them. If you like, lay your trap against me and do your worst. Do not forget that I trust in Allah, who is my Lord and your Lord.
There is no living creature that Allah does not keep alive and govern by the order He has established. O my people! What is the matter with you, that, this being the truth, you shrink from submitting to your Lord’s call?
If you stubbornly persist in turning away from the Allah-centered system of life that is the reason for your creation, my Lord will bring another people in your place, and no one can prevent it. By rejecting the way of life to which you are invited you cannot harm Allah. My Lord sees and watches over everything; and indeed I have conveyed to you the messages I was asked to convey.”

Verses 63–65
Salih said to them: “O my people! What if I have been chosen by my Lord as a prophet of mercy and am conveying to you sure knowledge that Allah has revealed, and you stubbornly go on opposing it: do you never consider what Allah will bring upon you? Moreover, if I do not carry out the duty of conveying the message I have been commanded to convey, who can protect me from Allah’s punishment? Following you would surely bring me harm.”
“O my people! The miracle you ask of me as proof of my prophethood is this camel! Leave her alone, and on no account try to harm her. Let her graze on Allah’s land; if you try to harm her, you will be punished with a severe punishment.”
Despite this warning of Salih’s, they slaughtered the camel mercilessly; thereupon Salih said to them, “After staying in your homes for three more days, you will be struck by the punishment I warned you of, and you will never escape it.”

When the time We had set for destruction came, We saved Salih and those who believed with him from the disgrace of that punishment, out of Our mercy, compassion, and tender care. The truth is that your Lord’s power is sufficient to do whatever He wills.
And the ungrateful, unruly, denying people We seized with a violent quake and, amid terrifying cries, made the earth swallow them up. So the people of Thamud vanished as though they had never lived in those lands, and they were wiped off the stage of history.

The angels charged with destroying the people of Lot first came to Abraham’s house to give him the good news of a son, and said, “Peace.” Abraham, saying “Peace” to them, offered his guests a roasted calf. But when he saw that the guests did not touch what was offered, he grew suspicious and uneasy. Seeing this, the messengers said to Abraham, “Do not be afraid; we have in fact been charged with punishing the people of Lot, and with giving you good news.”

Verses 77–80
The messenger angels left Abraham’s house and set out for Lot’s house; and when they reached Lot’s house, Lot, thinking that he could not protect them from the harm of his people, who were morally bankrupt, knew no limits, and had no values whatever, was seized with deep anxiety; not knowing what to do, his heart sank, and he began to say to himself, “Today will be a very hard day.”
Those who saw the guests in human form who had come to Lot’s house at once gathered in front of Lot’s house, pressing against his door, and demanded that Lot hand the guests over to them. Lot, knowing that they wanted the guests from him for their loathsome purposes, went out to the door and said to them: “O my people! Will you shame and disgrace me before my guests? Is there not one sensible man among you? Fear Allah and give up this loathsome habit of yours, and choose what is right, the way of marrying unmarried women and widows; if you do so, you may marry my daughters too.”
But the people, corrupt and conditioned to unruliness and immorality, said to Lot: “You know too that we have no interest in women, married or unmarried. You know what we want; do not waste your words.”
Lot said to himself in helplessness: “Oh, if only I had the strength to stop you, or could take refuge in a fortress to protect me from you and escape facing this situation.”

And to the people of Midian We sent their brother Shuayb as a prophet. He said: “O my people! Come to know Allah as He deserves, take Him alone as God, and respond to His call; only then will you have served Him. You have no true god other than Him; the right to determine how you should live belongs to Allah alone; accordingly, set your morals right and stop giving short measure and short weight. However prosperous and well-off you may seem, if you do not return to living the life that is Allah’s call, you will meet a punishment that will close in on you too and destroy you.”
Then Shuayb went on: “O my people! Do not, by turning away from the system of life to which you are invited in Allah’s name, cause disorder and evil to spread on earth; observe justice in measuring and weighing; do not steal people’s rights from them.
If you give up your way of life in which you associate partners with Allah, return to living by the system that is His call, and conduct your affairs within His limits, the profit you gain will be better for you. I am not a watchman or overseer over you; it is Allah who sees, watches over, and oversees you.”

Verses 100–101
O Muhammad! Of the peoples in these stories We tell you, some remains still stand as they were, while others have vanished like a field of crops eaten bare.
We did not wrong those who were ungrateful and rebelled and so deserved destruction; despite being counseled and warned, they stubbornly kept on taking lords and gods other than Allah and following them. Those they took as lords and gods not only were of no use to them, but added to their ruin and brought the punishment down on them.

Verses 102–107
Your Lord punishes, as it deserves, a community that persistently insists on living as people who associate partners with Allah and deny the truth. Your Lord’s grip is most severe.
In all that has been told there are lessons for those who reflect and use their reason. On the Day of Reckoning people will be gathered in Allah’s presence, and how they lived their worldly lives will be laid bare before their eyes. When That Day We have set comes, We will not postpone it, and on That Day no one will be able to speak without Allah’s leave; and in the end some will attain what they deserve as the blessed, and some as the wretched.
Those who deserve Hell, in their wretched state, will groan and wail in the Hell they deserve; they will remain there as long as the heavens and the earth endure, unless your Lord wills otherwise; without doubt your Lord does what He wills.

Just as people today are divided in two, into those who accept the call made in Allah’s name through the Quran and those who do not, so in the past the people of Moses also fell into dispute over the call of the Book We sent with him.
