Those who deny the verses conveyed to them mock, saying, “O you who claim that a Book is being sent down to you! In our view you have gone mad; if what you say is true, bring the angels and show them to us.” Know well that We do not send down the angels because those who associate partners with Allah demand it, but only to punish such people; and then their punishment is never postponed.

Verses 66–70
We made known to Lot through Our messengers that toward morning We would punish this perverted and unruly people with the punishment they deserved and wipe them out root and branch.
While Our messengers were saying these things to Lot, the perverted people of the city were shouting insolently in front of his house, demanding that Lot hand his guests over to them.
Lot went out to the door and said to them, “Look, these are my guests. Do not shame me before them; fear Allah and go away without disgracing me.” But the perverts, blind with frenzy in their unruliness, said to Lot, “Did we not forbid you to meet with people, to take this one and that under your wing, and to meddle in other people’s business? Have you forgotten?”

At last, toward morning, We seized these unruly, rabid perverts with a terrible sound and rained stones down upon them; screaming, they vanished, and We turned the place where they lived upside down. Without doubt there are lessons in this account for those who use their reason. The ruins of these destroyed cities still stand on roads that people travel. But only those who grasp Allah as He deserves and are conscious of their responsibilities toward Him draw the lessons to be drawn from them.

We punished them too, because they were ungrateful to Us and stubbornly persisted in their shirk and disbelief. Thus did We exact retribution on both communities; the ruins of both stand in the open, by the roadside; will you still not learn of these, see them, and take a lesson?

The people of al-Hijr, too, had accused their prophet, who invited them to the truth that is the reason for their creation, of lying, opposed him, and turned away from Our verses; they hollowed out mountains and carved rocks to build themselves homes they imagined were secure, thinking that there they would be protected from every danger.
But one night, toward morning, We seized them with a terrible sound and quake, punished them with the punishment they deserved, and wiped them out root and branch. The homes they had made by hollowing out mountains and carving rocks could not protect them from Allah’s punishment.

O Prophet! As you have been commanded, invite people openly to tawhid, and continue in obedience and worship! Pay no heed to those who, despite this, stubbornly persist in associating partners with Allah and denying the truth, and do not forget that We are enough against those who oppose Our call.
Those who turn their backs on Allah’s call will give account for taking lords and gods other than Him.
We know that your heart is heavy because of what they say and do. But until death comes to you, tirelessly continue your call and your prostration in your Lord’s name, and give thanks to Him with praise. Repeat that praise and worship belong to Allah, who created so many blessings for the human being.
