Surah Ya-Sin English Translation & Transliteration

¹Ya Sin!

²By this Quran, full of right judgments...

³You are certainly one of the messengers who have been sent.

⁴Through this Quran you are on a straight path.

⁵The sending down of this Quran is from Allah, the All-Mighty, abundant in mercy.

⁶It has been sent down so that you may warn a people who, though their forefathers were warned, have not woken up and so remain heedless.

⁷Indeed, the word of punishment, issued because they do not believe, has come true for most of them.

⁸It is as if We had fastened iron rings around their necks reaching up to their chins, so that they cannot bow their heads at all.

⁹And so it is as if We had set up a barrier before them and behind them that keeps them from reaching the truth, and had veiled their eyes; that is why they cannot see the truth.

¹⁰So it makes no difference whether you warn them or not, for they will not believe.

¹¹You can warn only the one who follows this Quran and feels a heartfelt, deep reverence for the Most Merciful (ar-Rahman). Give such a person good news of forgiveness from Allah and of an indescribably beautiful reward!

¹²Have no doubt that We will bring the dead to life, and We are recording the deeds they sent ahead and the traces they left behind. For We are recording everything in a clear book.

¹³Relate to them, as an instructive example, the case of the people of the town to whom We sent messengers.

¹⁴Recall when We sent them two messengers, but they accused both of them of lying. So We reinforced them with a third, and they said to the people: —We are messengers sent to you by Allah.

¹⁵The people of the town said: —You are only human beings like us; the Most Merciful could not have sent down anything. You are only telling lies.

¹⁶The messengers replied: —Our Lord knows that we are indeed messengers sent to you.

¹⁷Our duty is nothing but to convey/announce the divine message clearly.

¹⁸The people of the town said: —You are an ill omen for us. If you do not put an end to this, we will stone you to death and so punish you most terribly.

¹⁹The messengers said: —Your ill omen lies with yourselves. Do you count it an ill omen that you are given admonition? In truth, you are a wasteful people who have overstepped the limits.

²⁰Then a man came running from the far end of the town and said: O my people, come, follow these messengers.

²¹—Yes, follow these people who ask you for no wage. For they are on the right path.

²²—And what is wrong with me that I should not serve the One who created me? And it is to Him that you will be returned.

²³—Am I now to take other gods besides Allah? If the Most Merciful wished to harm me, their intercession would be of no use to me at all, nor could they save me.

²⁴—In that case I would be in clear misguidance.

²⁵—Now listen to me! I have believed in Allah, who is your Lord too.

²⁶Then he was told: Enter Paradise. He said: —Ah, if only my people knew

²⁷—that my Lord has forgiven me and bestowed great honors upon me.

²⁸After him, We did not send down armies from the sky against his people. Indeed, it is not in Our law to send down armies from the sky.

²⁹There was only a terrible cry. And behold, they were all destroyed.

³⁰Woe to these servants! Whenever a messenger came to them, the only thing they did was mock him.

³¹Do they not ever consider how many generations We destroyed before them, and that those can never come back?

³²And all of them will be gathered and brought before Us to give account.

³³The dead land, too, is a proof for them. We gave it life with rainwater and brought forth crops from it, and they keep eating from it.

³⁴And there We have grown gardens of date palms and grapevines, and caused springs to flow in them,

³⁵so that they may eat of their produce, though they did not grow it themselves. Will they still not give these blessings their due and be grateful?

³⁶How exalted is the glory of Allah, who created in pairs all the plants of the earth, human beings themselves, and many other beings they do not know! And He is free of all imperfection.

³⁷The night, too, is a proof for them. We withdraw the light of day from it, and they are left in darkness.

³⁸The sun, too, is a proof for them. It flows on in the orbit set for it. This is a law laid down by Allah, whose power and knowledge are boundless.

³⁹The moon, too, is a proof for them. We have set for it fixed stations, so that at the last station it becomes like a thin, dry date-palm stalk.

⁴⁰The sun cannot overtake the moon, nor can the night outrun the day. For each of them flows on in its own orbit.

⁴¹That We carried their forefathers in a laden ship is also a proof for them.

⁴²And that We created for them many other vehicles like the ship they ride in is also a proof for them.

⁴³If We wished, We would drown them. No one could come to their rescue, nor could they save themselves.

⁴⁴If We do not, it is only out of Our compassion and mercy, and because We grant them respite until a set time so that they may benefit from the blessings of this world.

⁴⁵When they are told: —Guard yourselves against what will lead you to punishment in this world and the Hereafter, so that you may receive divine mercy,

⁴⁶and whenever a sign from their Lord's verses reminding them of this comes to them, the only thing they do is turn away.

⁴⁷And when they are told: —Feed the hungry and the needy from the blessings Allah has given you, these ungrateful disbelievers say to those who believe: —Are we to feed those whom Allah could feed if He wished? Then you are clearly talking nonsense.

⁴⁸And they say: "If you are truthful, when will this punishment you keep threatening us with come?"

⁴⁹All they are waiting for is a single terrible cry that will seize them while they are still arguing with one another.

⁵⁰Then they will be able neither to make any bequest to one another nor to return to their families.

⁵¹When the Trumpet (Sur) is blown a second time, behold, they rise and rush toward their Lord's presence.

⁵²—Then they will say: "Woe to us! Who has raised us from our graves?" They will be answered: "This is what the Most Merciful promised!" The messengers had always told the truth.

⁵³All this is nothing but a single terrible cry. And behold, they are all gathered before Us.

⁵⁴On that day no one will be wronged in any way, and you will receive only the recompense of what you did.

⁵⁵On that day the people of Paradise will be in delight and enjoyment.

⁵⁶They and their spouses will be seated on thrones beneath shades.

⁵⁷There they will have every kind of fruit. In short, they will find everything their souls desire.

⁵⁸From their Lord, whose compassion is boundless, there is a word of well-being and peace (salam).

⁵⁹And you, O guilty ones, stand apart now!

⁶⁰(60-61) Yes, O Children of Adam! Did I not warn you: Do not serve Satan, for he is your clear enemy; serve Me alone—this is the straight path?

⁶²Satan had led many of you astray over generations; should you not have realized this and come to your senses?

⁶³Here before you is the Hell you were promised!

⁶⁴As a result of your blindness to the truths, enter it now!

⁶⁵On that day We will seal their mouths, their hands will speak to Us, and their feet will bear witness to what they did.

⁶⁶Had We wished, We would have blinded their eyes completely, and they would be rushing about bewildered, trying to find their way.

⁶⁷Had We wished, We would have overturned them from their state and turned them to stone, so that they could neither go forward nor turn back.

⁶⁸Whomever We grant a long life, We reverse the course of his creation by taking away his strength and vigor. Will they still not use their reason?

⁶⁹We did not teach you poetry, nor is being a poet your work. The revelation that has come to you is only an admonition and a source of honor, and a Quran that makes the truths clear,

⁷⁰so that those who are alive may be warned by this Quran, and the disbelievers who cover up the truths may be informed that the punishment is their due.

⁷¹Do they not see that, as a work of Our power, We created for them the animals they own?

⁷²We tamed those animals for them. Some of them they ride, and of some they eat the meat.

⁷³In these animals there are many other benefits for them; in particular, they benefit from dairy products. Will they still not give these blessings their due?

⁷⁴Yet they have taken certain gods besides Allah, from whom they hope for help.

⁷⁵But those can never help them; on the contrary, they themselves become soldiers standing ready to protect them.

⁷⁶So do not let their reckless talk grieve you. For We know very well both what they keep hidden and what they disclose.

⁷⁷Does this human being, then, never consider that We created him from a drop of water/sperm, and yet he now turns into Our open enemy?

⁷⁸Yes, he has forgotten how he himself was created, and he even goes so far as to strike a likeness for Us, saying: —Who will give life to these bones that have crumbled to dust?

⁷⁹Say: —He who created them the first time will give them life. For He has full knowledge of every kind of creation.

⁸⁰It is He who has produced fire for you from green wood, with which you indeed kindle fire.

⁸¹Is not He who created the heavens and the earth able to create the like of them? Certainly He is! For Allah is the all-knowing, perfect Creator.

⁸²For when He wills a thing to be, all He does is say to it: "Be!" and it at once enters the process of becoming.

⁸³Exalted/incomparable is Allah, in whose hand is the sovereignty over everything in the universe. One day you will all be returned to Him to give account.
