Surah Al-Jathiyah English Translation & Transliteration

¹Ha Mim.

²The sending down of this Book/the Quran is from Allah, who is perfect in all He does and whose every judgment is right.

³There are surely many signs/proofs in the heavens and the earth for a people who would believe.

⁴In your own creation, and in the other living creatures He has spread across the earth, there are many signs/proofs for a people who would believe wholeheartedly.

⁵In the alternation of night and day, in Allah's sending down from the sky rain, the means of provision, and giving life with it to dead land, and in His making the life-giving winds blow in different ways, there are many signs/proofs for a people who can use their reason.

⁶These are Allah's verses, which We have sent down to you with the truth. In what discourse, then, will they believe, if not in Allah and His verses?

⁷Woe to every one of those who invent lies about Allah and are steeped in sin!

⁸They hear Allah's verses recited to them, and then insolently persist in resisting those verses as if they had never heard them. So give such a person news of a painful punishment!

⁹And when they learn something of Our verses, they at once make light of it and turn it into a joke. For them too there is a humiliating punishment.

¹⁰Hell is at their heels! Neither the wealth and property they have earned nor the protectors they placed between themselves and Allah will be of any use to them. For them too there is a terrible punishment.

¹¹This Book/the Quran is a guide to the right path. As for the disbelievers who cover up their Lord's verses, for them there is a painful punishment of the worst kind.

¹²It is Allah who has placed at your service the seas, on which ships sail in accordance with the laws He has laid down, so that you may obtain your share of His grace and generosity and thus give the blessings their due.

¹³Yes, and everything in the heavens and on the earth—He has placed it all at your service. In this there are many messages for a people who can reflect deeply.

¹⁴Tell those who believe to forgive, for now, the deeds of those who do not expect the days of Allah's punishment to come, so that every people may suffer the penalty for what they have done!

¹⁵For whoever does a good and beneficial deed does it for his own good. And whoever does an evil deed does it to his own detriment. In the end you will be brought before your Lord.

¹⁶Indeed, We gave the Children of Israel the Book, judgment, and prophethood, bestowed on them good and clean provision, and favored them above all the peoples of their time.

¹⁷We also taught them the necessary knowledge concerning religious and worldly affairs. But after divine knowledge came to them, they fell into disagreement among themselves purely out of greed and envy. Surely your Lord will pass His final judgment between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning the matters in which they disagreed.

¹⁸Then We showed you, by Our command, a path/sharia concerning religious and worldly affairs. So follow this path, and never follow the ways of those who know nothing of right and law!

¹⁹For they can be of no use to you against punishment from Allah. Do not forget that these wrongdoers are protectors of one another. So be it—Allah is the Protector of the God-conscious (muttaqin), who guard themselves against defying Him.

²⁰This Quran is a source of insight for humankind, and a guide and a mercy for those who believe wholeheartedly.

²¹Or do those who pursue evil think that We will treat them as equal, in their life and in their death, to those who believe and do good and beautiful deeds? What an evil judgment they make!

²²Allah created the heavens and the earth for a true purpose, so that everyone may be paid in full for what they have earned, without being wronged in any way.

²³Do you see this person who has taken his own desires and whims as his god, who turns away despite knowing the truth, and so has closed his ears and heart to Allah's messages, drawn a veil over his eyes, and chosen misguidance? Who besides Allah could guide such a person to the right path? Will you still not reflect and take a lesson?

²⁴They say: "Life is nothing but this worldly life we live; some of us die and some are born, and only time will destroy us." Yet they have no knowledge of this; they are merely speaking of figments of their imagination.

²⁵Yet whenever Our verses are conveyed to them clearly, the only argument they can put forward is to say: —If you are telling the truth, bring back our forefathers who have died and gone.

²⁶Say: —It is Allah who gives you life and who will cause you to die, and who will gather you all together on the Day of Resurrection, whose coming is beyond doubt. But most people do not know this truth.

²⁷For the sovereignty of the heavens and the earth belongs to Allah. On the day the Hour, the end of the world, comes—on that day those who sought to render Allah's verses ineffective and void will surely lose.

²⁸And on that day you will see every community on its knees in fear. Every community will be summoned to face its book/record of deeds, and on that day you will all be paid in full for what you did.

²⁹This is Our record, which will tell you the truths. For We have recorded in it everything you have done.

³⁰As for those who believe and do good and beautiful deeds, their Lord will immerse them in His mercy. That is the clear salvation.

³¹The disbelievers who cover up Allah's verses will be told: —Were you not the ones who, when My verses were recited to you, insolently strutted in arrogance against them and became a guilty people?

³²For when it was said, "Allah's promise will surely be fulfilled, and there is no doubt that the Hour, the end of the world, will come," you used to say: —What on earth is this Hour? We know nothing of such a thing. It is nothing but a mere delusion, and we firmly do not believe that any such thing will happen.

³³At last the evil consequences of the sins they committed will come to light, and the very truth they used to make light of and mock will close in on them from every side.

³⁴—Today We forget you, just as you forgot this day of yours. Now your abode is the Fire, and there is no one who can help you.

³⁵The reason you have come to this state is that you made light of Allah's verses and that the life of this world deceived you. So today they will not be taken out of it, nor will their excuses be heard.

³⁶All praise belongs to Allah, Lord of the heavens, Lord of the earth, and Lord/Owner of all the worlds.

³⁷For greatness in the heavens and on the earth belongs to Allah alone. He is absolutely supreme and exalted, and His every judgment is right.
