Surah Ad-Dukhan English Translation & Transliteration

¹Ha Mim.

²By this Book, which sets forth what is right and true with clarity!

³We sent it down on a blessed night. For from the very beginning it was We who gave warning.

⁴On that night (with the sending down of the Quran) every wise matter was distinguished from falsehood.

⁵In accordance with a law laid down by Us, it is for this that We sent the messengers,

⁶as a requirement of your Lord's mercy. Surely it is He who hears everything and knows everything—

⁷the mercy, that is, of the Lord of the heavens, the earth, and all that is between them. So it is, if you truly wish to believe.

⁸For there is no god but Him. It is He who gives life and causes death. He is your Lord and the Lord/Owner of your forefathers before you.

⁹Yet they still linger in the swamp of doubt and suspicion.

¹⁰So wait for the day when the sky will be covered by a dense smoke,

¹¹a smoke that will envelop all the people. That is the painful punishment!

¹²They will plead: "Our Lord, please lift this punishment from us; we will now believe."

¹³How far they are from taking admonition! Yet a messenger who set forth the truth clearly had come to them.

¹⁴Then they turned away from him and said: —A madman who has been taught by others!

¹⁵Now, if We lift this punishment for a short while, you will at once return to your former ways.

¹⁶Know well that on the day We strike that great blow, We will punish them as they deserve.

¹⁷Indeed, before them We tested Pharaoh's people too. A noble messenger came to them as well and said:

¹⁸Come to me, O servants of Allah! I am a trustworthy messenger sent to you.

¹⁹—And do not act arrogantly toward Allah. For I have come to you with a clear proof.

²⁰—I have sought refuge in Allah, who is your Lord and my Lord, from your stoning me to death.

²¹If you do not believe me, then at least stand out of my way.

²²Moses implored his Lord, saying: "These are a people steeped in sin."

²³Allah said: —Set out with My servants by night; do not forget that you will surely be pursued!

²⁴Cross the sea at your ease, and leave the path just as it is. It is certain that that army will be drowned.

²⁵How much they left behind! So many vineyards and gardens, and so many springs,

²⁶so many cultivated fields and fine mansions,

²⁷so many blessings in which they took delight!

²⁸Yes, thus they passed away. And We left all of this to another people.

²⁹Neither the heavens nor the earth wept for them! Nor was their punishment postponed.

³⁰Indeed, We saved the Children of Israel from that humiliating punishment,

³¹that is, from Pharaoh. For he was a tyrant with no regard for anyone's rights.

³²Indeed, We chose them above other nations with divine knowledge/revelation.

³³And We gave them many signs, each of which was a clear means of testing.

³⁴Yet these people go so far as to say:

³⁵—Once we die, that is the end. We are not going to be raised again.

³⁶If you are telling the truth, then bring back our forefathers who have died and gone.

³⁷Are they stronger, or the people of Tubba' and the communities before them, all of whom We destroyed because they were sunk in sin?

³⁸We did not create the heavens, the earth, and what is between them in vain, for play and amusement.

³⁹We created them only to fulfill a lofty purpose, but most people do not know this.

⁴⁰There is no doubt that the day on which good and evil will be separated is the day on which all people will be gathered.

⁴¹On that day no friend will be of any benefit to a friend, nor will help reach them from anywhere,

⁴²except those on whom Allah has mercy. Surely it is He whose power is infinite and whose mercy has no limit.

⁴³It is a fact that the tree of Zaqqum

⁴⁴is the food of the sinner.

⁴⁵Like molten metal it boils in the bellies,

⁴⁶as boiling water boils.

⁴⁷And a voice: —Seize him and cast him into the very midst of the flames.

⁴⁸Then pour boiling water over his head as punishment.

⁴⁹—Now taste this punishment! Were you not someone influential and esteemed?

⁵⁰This is the very punishment you never would believe in from the start.

⁵¹As for those who guarded themselves against sins, they will be in a secure position,

⁵²in the gardens of Paradise and beside springs.

⁵³They will wear garments of fine satin and gold-embroidered silk, and sit facing one another, conversing.

⁵⁴Thus it will be; and We will pair them with those of high worth.

⁵⁵There, in security, they will find every fruit they wish for.

⁵⁶There they will taste no death except the first death. And Allah has protected them from the punishment of the flames,

⁵⁷as a favor/kindness from your Lord. That is the greatest salvation.

⁵⁸We have made this Quran easy in your own language so that they may reflect and take a lesson.

⁵⁹So wait and see what will befall them; they too are waiting to see what will befall you.
