Long ago, the peoples of Thamud and Ad denied these threats of Mine as lies.
But the people of Thamud were destroyed by a violent quake.
As for the people of Ad, they were destroyed by a fierce, devastating whirlwind.
Allah made that whirlwind blow upon them without a break for seven nights and eight days, to wipe them out root and branch. You can picture them lying felled on the ground like the uprooted stumps of date palms.
Now look: can you see anything left of them?

For that pus is food for the sinful alone.

No more needs saying: by all that you can see,
and by all that you cannot see, I swear
that this Quran is most certainly the word of a noble and honorable messenger.
So it is not the word of a poet. You do not believe this truth at all.
Nor is this Quran the word of a soothsayer. But you give no thought to this at all.
It is sent down from Allah, the Lord of the worlds.
Had he invented certain words and attributed them to Us,
We would have seized him firmly with Our might,
and then We would have severed his life vein,
and none of you could have prevented it.
