Surah An-Najm English Translation & Transliteration

¹By the divine revelation that is sent down piece by piece,

²your companion has neither strayed nor lost his way.

³For he does not speak according to his own desires and whims.

⁴This Quran is nothing but the revelation sent down to him.

⁵This revelation was taught to him by one whose position with Allah is very strong.

⁶He possesses superior qualities. Then he showed himself in all his majesty.

⁷At that moment he was at the highest point of the horizon.

⁸Then he drew near to him and came down.

⁹So that the distance between them was the span of two bows drawn one over the other, or even closer.

¹⁰At that moment he thus conveyed to His servant what He revealed.

¹¹The heart did not deny what the eye saw.

¹²Are you now doubting and arguing about what he saw?

¹³He had certainly seen him on yet another descent,

¹⁴beside the lote tree at the farthest boundary,

¹⁵at the garden of rest beside it.

¹⁶At that time, how it had enveloped the lote tree in all its grandeur!

¹⁷His eye neither shifted to any side nor strayed.

¹⁸Thus he saw one of the greatest signs of his Lord.

¹⁹Now, have you ever considered Lat and Uzza,

²⁰and Manat, the third, the other one?

²¹So the males are yours and the females are Allah's, is that it?

²²What an unjust and unconscionable division this is!

²³They are nothing but names that you and your forefathers have made up. Allah has sent down no knowledge or proof concerning them. Although the Quran, a guide to the right path, has come to them from their Lord, they still follow baseless claims and their whims.

²⁴Or does the truth depend on a person's desires and wishes?

²⁵This world belongs to Allah, and so does the Hereafter.

²⁶How many angels there are in the heavens whose intercession is of no avail at all, unless Allah gives permission for those whom He wills and is pleased with.

²⁷Indeed, those who do not believe in the Hereafter have gone so far as to name the angels as female beings.

²⁸Yet they have no knowledge of this. They follow nothing but conjectures born of imagination. And conjectural reports and wishful thinking count for nothing where the truth is concerned.

²⁹So do not take seriously those who turn their backs on Our warning, the Quran, and who care about nothing but the pleasures of worldly life.

³⁰Their knowledge and horizons are limited to this transient world. Have no doubt that your Lord knows best who strays from His path and who is on the right path.

³¹For whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth all belongs to Allah. Allah will punish those who do evil with the full recompense of what they did, and will reward those who do good and righteous deeds with the best of what they did.

³²They are those who keep away from major sins and shameful conduct, apart from minor faults. Know that your Lord's forgiveness is boundless. For He knew very well what you were when He first created you from soil, and when you were still embryos in your mothers' wombs; so do not clear yourselves of guilt. Surely He knows best who is most conscientious toward His commands and prohibitions.

³³Will you look at the one who turns away,

³⁴who gives a little of his wealth and then becomes stingy?

³⁵Does he possess divine knowledge, then, so that he sees the future?

³⁶Or has he not been told what is in the pages of Moses,

³⁷and the knowledge revealed to the loyal Abraham?

³⁸That no sinner will bear the sin of another,

³⁹and that a human being will receive only the recompense of his own effort and striving,

⁴⁰and that when the day comes he will surely see the recompense of his effort,

⁴¹and that he will then be paid its recompense in full,

⁴²and that the final destination is to your Lord.

⁴³For it is He who will make people laugh and He who will make them weep!

⁴⁴It is He who will cause death and He who will give life!

⁴⁵It is He who created you in pairs, male and female,

⁴⁶from a drop of water cast into the mother's womb.

⁴⁷And raising to life again also rests with Him.

⁴⁸It is He who gives little and He who gives much...

⁴⁹He is also the Lord of the star Shi'ra (Sirius), which they hold sacred.

⁵⁰It is He who destroyed the former people of Ad,

⁵¹and the people of Thamud, leaving no one behind,

⁵²and before them the people of Noah. For they had gone to extremes in wrongdoing and transgression.

⁵³It is He who also destroyed the people of Lot, turning them upside down.

⁵⁴What a terrible punishment enveloped them!

⁵⁵So which of your Lord's blessings are you doubting?

⁵⁶This too is a warner like the warners before.

⁵⁷The Day of Resurrection draws nearer day by day.

⁵⁸But no one other than Allah can know when it will come.

⁵⁹Do you now find this hadith/the Quran strange?

⁶⁰You laugh at your plight, which ought to make you weep!

⁶¹And you even go so far as to mock!

⁶²So now, prostrate to Allah/submit to Him, and fulfill your servitude to Him.
