Surah Al-Qamar English Translation & Transliteration

¹When the Hour, the end of this world, arrives and the moon splits/all truths come to light.

²Yet even if they see a sign/miracle, they still do not accept it, and they say, "This is ongoing magic."

³Because they followed their desires and whims, they clung to lies in the face of the truth that had come to them; but the truth of every matter comes out in the end.

⁴Indeed, there has come to them many an important report that would restrain them from disbelief and rebellion,

⁵the Quran, full of most wise admonitions and warnings; but, as it turned out, all these warnings were of no use at all.

⁶So turn away from them. A day will come when that caller will call them to something they will not like at all.

⁷On that day everyone will come out of their graves with their eyes bulging in fear, and they will scatter like swarms of locusts.

⁸On that day too they will run toward the caller in panic, and the disbelievers will say, "What a calamitous day this is!"

⁹Yes, before them the people of Noah also clung to lies; they accused Our servant Noah of lying, said, "He is a madman," and obstructed his message in every way.

¹⁰So Noah implored his Lord: "My Lord, I have been overcome; help me!"

¹¹Thereupon We opened the gates of the sky and poured down rain in torrents.

¹²And We made water gush out of the earth. At last the waters met to carry out what had been decreed, and turned into a flood.

¹³We put Noah aboard a ship made of planks locked tightly together.

¹⁴And the ship sailed on under Our watch. This was a reward given to Noah, who had been met with ingratitude.

¹⁵We certainly left that ship as a sign of the flood. So is there anyone who will reflect and take a lesson?

¹⁶And how were My punishment and My warnings—did you see?

¹⁷We have certainly made this Quran easy so that admonition and lessons may be taken from it. So is there anyone who will understand and take admonition and a lesson?

¹⁸The people of Ad also accused their messenger of lying. But see how My punishment and My warnings were!

¹⁹So We sent against them, on a pitch-black day, a violent and unrelenting whirlwind.

²⁰It was hurling people about like uprooted palm trunks.

²¹And how were My punishment and My warnings—did you see?

²²We have certainly made this Quran easy so that admonition and lessons may be taken from it. So is there anyone who will understand and take admonition and a lesson?

²³The people of Thamud too accused their messenger of lying and paid no heed to My warnings.

²⁴"Are we to follow this human being, who is no different from us? Then we would truly have gone astray and lost our minds," they said.

²⁵"And of all of us, is it him the revelation has found? No, in fact he is an insolent liar."

²⁶They will soon understand who the insolent liar is!

²⁷We are sending this she-camel to test them: —Watch what they will do, and be patient!

²⁸Tell them this: —The water has been divided between you and the camel; each will benefit from the water when their turn comes.

²⁹They called their man. The ringleader of the gang took up a knife and savagely slaughtered the camel.

³⁰They saw how My punishment and My warnings were!

³¹We set upon them a terrible, thunderous earthquake, and in the end they were all crushed like the grass trampled in an animal pen.

³²We have certainly made this Quran easy so that admonition and lessons may be taken from it. So is there anyone who will understand and take admonition and a lesson?

³³The people of Lot too accused their messenger of lying and paid no heed to the warnings.

³⁴So We sent upon them a whirlwind that rained down stones. But We had rescued the family of Lot in the hours before dawn,

³⁵as a blessing from Us. This is how We reward those who are grateful.

³⁶Lot had warned them that We would punish them severely. But they met the warnings with doubt and took no notice of them.

³⁷Moreover, they pressured Lot so that they could have relations with his guests. So We blinded their eyes/shut off their perception and awareness. "Since that is so, taste now what My punishment and My warnings are!"

³⁸Early one morning, an unstoppable punishment came down upon their heads.

³⁹—Taste My punishment, then, and see what My threat is like!

⁴⁰We have certainly made this Quran easy so that it may be an admonition and a lesson. So is there anyone who will understand and take admonition and a lesson?

⁴¹Warners had also come to Pharaoh's dynasty in former times.

⁴²But they denied all Our signs/miracles. So We punished them in a manner befitting Our might and power.

⁴³Now, are these disbelievers of yours any better than they were? Or is there, in indelible pages, a guarantee of immunity for you, saying you will not be touched?

⁴⁴Or do they say, "We are a close-knit, organized and solid force; no one can defeat us"?

⁴⁵Know that this group will soon be routed, and they will turn their backs and flee.

⁴⁶But the day on which they will truly be punished is the day of the Hour, when the end of this world comes. How dreadful and how terrible that Hour is! If only they knew.

⁴⁷Surely the guilty are condemned to misguidance and destruction.

⁴⁸On that day they will be dragged face down into Hell, and they will be told, "Now taste the touch of the scorching fire of Hell!"

⁴⁹Surely We have created everything within a destiny/measure and order.

⁵⁰Our command to create is instantaneous, like the blink of an eye.

⁵¹We have certainly destroyed many communities like you. So is there anyone who will reflect and take a lesson?

⁵²Everything they did has been recorded in well-protected pages.

⁵³Everything, great or small, has been set down line by line.

⁵⁴As for the God-conscious (muttaqin), who guard themselves against defying Allah, they will be in gardens and beside rivers.

⁵⁵They will be hosted as the most valued and most honored guests in the presence of Allah, Possessor of infinite power and sovereignty.
