Verse 1
O you who believe! Do not take those who associate partners with Allah, those who deny the truth, and the hypocrites, who are My enemies and your enemies, as friends; do not show them closeness, and do not share your secrets with them. For they have refused to live by the order of life to which Allah, who created them and endowed them with so many blessings, invites through His Prophet and His Book. What is more, they left nothing undone to drive you out of your homeland because you believe in Allah’s call. In spite of this, it is not right for you to form a bond of affection with them; from now on, whoever of you does so has strayed from the right path.
Allah is aware of all that you do, whether in secret or openly.

Had your enemies won a victory over you, they would not show friendship or act mercifully as you do; they would commit every kind of oppression with their hands and their tongues, and try to tear you by force from the order of life that is the reason for your creation and bring you back to their own orders of shirk and disbelief.

Know well that the relatives and children you are trying to protect can be of no benefit to you on the Day of Resurrection and Reckoning. Verses 4–5
There are fine examples for you in Abraham and those who followed him; they said to their people, who associated partners with Allah and denied the truth: “We are clear of you and of everyone and everything you take as lord and god besides Allah. Hatred and enmity have arisen between us, and will remain until you take Allah alone as God.”
At that time Abraham also said to his father: “I will pray to Allah for you and ask for your forgiveness, but know that if you do not give up denying the truth, I will never have the power to prevent the punishment Allah will give you.”
Abraham and those who followed him always used to pray thus: “Our Lord! We trust in You alone, and there is no god but You. Our final destination is Your presence; forgive us; You are the Possessor of supreme power and mercy. O our Lord! Protect us from the oppression of the wrongdoers; do not let us fall into their hands or be at the mercy of their tongues; You have power over everything. You alone know the one absolute truth of everything and give judgment.”

Verse 6
O you who believe! In the effort shown by Abraham and the believers who followed him there are fine examples for those who believe in the Hereafter.
Whoever does not take as his example the stance of Abraham and those who followed him, and does not give up befriending those who associate partners with Allah and deny the truth, wrongs himself.
Do not forget that it is you who need Allah’s support; Allah has no need of anyone. He is the Possessor of supreme power and knowledge.

Verses 8–9
Allah does not forbid you to deal justly with those who do not oppose your effort to live and keep alive your religion, the order and morality of Islam, and who therefore do not attack you or wage war on you. For Allah loves those who are just. He forbids you to befriend those who wage war on you and drive you out of your homes, and those who help them. Those who take such people as friends are the very wrongdoers.

Verse 10
O you who believe! Test the believing women who emigrate and come to you. Allah knows full well whether they truly believe or not. If you are sure of their faith, do not send them back to their husbands who deny the truth. For these believing women are no longer lawful to their disbelieving husbands. Give back to their husbands the dowers they gave.
After this, there is no harm in your marrying these women by mutual consent, provided you give them their dowers. Do not continue your marriages with women who persist in remaining in shirk and disbelief and do not emigrate; ask for the dowers you gave them back. The men who associate partners with Allah and deny the truth likewise have the right to ask for the dowers they gave their wives who have left them and married believing men. These are Allah’s rulings; Allah judges between you with justice, and He is the Judge of judges.

Verse 11
If you are left with claims against a woman who believed in Allah’s call and then turned back from her faith and fled to those who associate partners with Allah and deny the truth, and you then fight those people and win spoils, give from these spoils to the believers whose wives fled to them a share equal to the dower they paid their wives in the past. So fulfill your responsibilities toward Allah, in whose rulings you believe.
