Verses 1–2

O people! Your excessive passion for piling up and amassing wealth has all but blinded you. As though this were the purpose of your creation, you compete with one another in it, and you boast of what you have multiplied and let it divert you. Yet Allah created the human being so that he would strive to live by the divine system and morality, compete with others in drawing ever nearer to his Lord, and take no god other than Him. The passion for amassing wealth of the human being who disregards this truth has veiled his eyes and his heart until he falls into the pit of the grave.

Those who persist in refusing to grasp the reason for their creation, and who use up the time given to them amassing wealth and property and boasting of it, will surely understand in the end how wrong their choice was. If only they would grasp this truth before they come face to face with Hell on the Day of Reckoning!
